Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if you make any mistakes.

Step 1: Draw the Body Outline

Start by drawing a large, tilted teardrop shape for the whale’s body, making sure it narrows significantly toward the back.

Draw the body outline of the whale

Step 2: Add the Tail Flukes

Draw the tail fin at the narrow end of the body, creating two rounded leaf shapes joined together to form the flukes.

Add the whale's flukes

Step 3: Draw the Whale’s Fins and Belly Lines

Add two small, curved pectoral fins on the side and draw several long, curved lines along the bottom of the body to create the whale’s underbelly pleats.

Erase any part of the body outline where the fins attach to make it look connected.

How to Fix Common Whale Drawing Mistakes

  • Body Shape: If the body looks too round, try stretching the teardrop shape in Step 1 so it looks longer and more streamlined.
  • Tail Connection: If the tail looks separate, ensure the lines from the body in Step 2 flow directly into the flukes.
  • Belly Lines: If the pleats look messy, try drawing them in Step 3 using light, parallel curves that follow the shape of the stomach.
  • Spot Placement: Keep the spots in Step 4 mostly along the top ridge of the back so they look like natural markings.

Helpful Whale Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Use Light Pencil Strokes: Draw the main body shape lightly at first so you can easily erase any lines you don’t like.
  • Curved Lines: Use smooth, continuous curves for the belly lines to make the whale look three-dimensional.
  • Rosy Cheeks: Placing the rosy cheeks just at the corners of the smile makes the whale look extra happy.
  • Color Blending: Try blending your blue and green crayons together in Step 6 to create a realistic ocean-water effect.
