Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if you make any mistakes.

Step 1: Draw the Unicorn’s Head Outline

Start by drawing a rounded, somewhat pear-shaped outline for the unicorn’s head.

Step 2: Add the Body Outline

From the back of the head, draw a large, rounded and slightly elongated shape for the unicorn’s body. It should connect smoothly to the head.

Keep it open at the bottom so you can connect it to the legs.

Step 3: Draw the Legs and Hooves

From the bottom of the body, draw four short, sturdy lines extending downwards for the legs. At the very bottom of each leg, add a small, rounded rectangle shape to show the hooves.

Step 4: Draw the Mane, Tail, and Horn

This is where the unicorn gets its magic! On top of the head, draw a small, pointy shape for the unicorn’s horn. From the head, draw a long, flowing, wavy shape for the mane.

From the back of the body, draw a long, flowing, wavy shape for the tail. Add curved lines inside the mane and tail for a realistic look.

Erase any part of the head and body outline where the mane attaches to make it look connected.

Step 5: Add the Unicorn’s Face Details

Let’s give our unicorn a friendly face!

  • From the top of the head, draw two small, rounded triangle shapes for the ear.
  • On the head, draw two small, round dots for the eyes.
  • Below the eyes, add two very small dots for the nostrils.
  • Add a small, curved line for a smile.

Erase any part of the head and mane outline where the ear attaches to make it look connected.

Step 6: Color Your Magical Unicorn!

Now, it’s time to add color! Unicorns are often shown as being white, but you can also make them pastel pink, light blue, or yellow.

For the mane and tail, try using rainbow colors or a mix of purples, blues, and pinks to make them look magical. Don’t forget to color the horn, maybe with a pearly white or a shiny gold!

How to Fix Common Unicorn Drawing Mistakes

  • Head Too Small: Make sure the head is in proportion to the body. If your unicorn’s head looks too small, go back to Step 1 and draw a bigger shape.
  • Missing Horn: The horn is the most important part of a unicorn! If you forgot it, add it in Step 4.
  • Mane and Tail Too Short: Unicorns have beautiful, flowing manes and tails. If yours are too short, make them longer and wavier in Step 4.
  • Legs Too Long/Thin: Unicorn legs are short and sturdy. If yours look too long or flimsy, shorten and thicken them, and remember to add those small hoof shapes at the bottom as shown in Step 3.
  • Missing Face Details: Don’t forget the eyes, nostrils, and smile to make your unicorn look friendly and magical!

Helpful Unicorn Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Start with Simple Shapes: Notice how the unicorn begins with basic rounded shapes. This makes it easier to build the rest of the drawing.
  • Go with the Flow: The mane and tail are all about smooth, graceful curves. Try to use continuous, flowing pencil strokes to get that elegant look.
  • Practice Your Shapes: Drawing good rounded shapes will help a lot with drawing unicorns, from their bodies to their snouts!
  • Light Sketching: Always start by drawing lightly with your pencil so it’s easy to erase and fix mistakes. You can press harder once you’re happy with your lines.
