Step 2: Draw the Body Shape

Attached to the bottom of the head, draw a curved, thick oval shape that tapers slightly to form the main chest and body (thorax and abdomen).

Step 3: Draw the Grasshopper’s Legs

Grasshoppers have six legs, but they come in two different types:

Front and Middle Legs (4 total): Draw these four legs as short, thin, gently curved lines sticking out from the front of the body. Keep them simple, with a slight bend at the joint, and finish each with a tiny, pointed foot.

Back Jumping Legs (2 total): Draw the thick upper segment first, then attach the long, curved lower segment that bends sharply backward. Try to make the back legs larger than the front legs for a realistic look. Finish the very bottom with a small, two-pronged foot detail for grip.

Step 4: Add Body Segments and Wings

Draw a few curved lines across the body to show the segments of the chest and abdomen. Draw a smooth, curved line along the bottom of the chest area to outline the underbelly. Add a simple wing shape folded along the top of the body.

Step 5: Draw Face Details and Antennae

Let’s give our grasshopper a cute face!

  • Draw two thin, curved lines with small balls on the end for the antennae.
  • Draw two large ovals with inner pupils on the head for the eyes.
  • Add a large curved smile and two small ovals on either side for cheeks.

Step 6: Color Your Hopping Grasshopper!

It’s time to add color! Use a bright, light green for the body and a pale yellow or cream for the underbelly. Color the legs a darker green and fill in the antennae and face details with black.

How to Fix Common Grasshopper Drawing Mistakes

  • Leg Difference: The key is to make the back jumping legs in Step 3 larger than the front four legs.
  • Body Segments: Don’t skip the curved lines in Step 4! They make the body look properly segmented, like a real insect.
  • Proportions: Make sure the head is noticeably smaller than the body. The body oval should be the largest part of the drawing.
  • Underbelly: The underbelly line in Step 4 helps define the shape of the body and makes it look rounder.

Helpful Grasshopper Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Joint Focus: When drawing the large back legs, focus on the sharp bend at the “knee” to show that they are built for jumping.
  • Color Blending: Use a lighter green near the underbelly and a darker green on the back when coloring to give the body a three-dimensional look.
  • Antennae Detail: Keep the antennae thin and flexible-looking, as they are used for feeling and sensing the world.
  • Action Pose: Draw some tiny, curved dash lines below its feet to show it bouncing slightly, ready for its next hop!

Grasshopper Fun Facts for Kids

  • Master Jumpers: Grasshoppers can jump incredibly far—up to 20 times the length of their own bodies!
  • Ears on the Belly: They don’t hear with their heads; they have ears located on the side of their abdomen (body) right behind their legs!
  • Singing Legs: Grasshoppers make their famous chirping or “singing” sounds by rubbing their back legs against their wings or other body parts.
  • Color Camouflage: Most grasshoppers are green or brown to help them blend in perfectly with grass and dirt, hiding from birds.
