Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if there are mistakes. Continue by following the arrow step.
Step 1: Draw the Duck’s Head Outline
Start by drawing a rounded oval shape for the duck’s head. On top of the head, draw a small, slightly jagged or spiky tuft of feathers to give it some character.

Step 2: Add the Duck’s Body Outline
Now, let’s give our duck a plump body! From the back of the head, draw a long, curved line that swoops down and then curves up to meet the front of the head, forming the duck’s body. It should be a rounded, almost teardrop shape, wider at the bottom.

Step 3: Draw the Wing and Legs
For the wing, draw a rounded, slightly flattened oval shape on the side of the duck’s body. For the legs, draw two short, straight lines extending downwards from the bottom of the body. Add three short, straight lines at the bottom of each leg for the webbed feet.

Step 4: Add the Duck’s Face Details
Let’s give our duck a friendly face!
- Inside the head, draw a small, round dot for the eye with a small dot inside for more expression.
- From the front of the head, draw a flat, rounded shape for the duck’s beak. It should extend outwards and have a slight curve.
- Add a small, curved line at the back of the beak to show the mouth opening.

Step 5: Color Your Cute Duck!
Time to bring your duck to life with color! Our example duck is a bright yellow, a classic color for a cute duckling! You can color the beak and feet orange. The eye can be black with a tiny white highlight.

How to Fix Common Duck Drawing Mistakes
- Body Too Thin: Ducks have plump, rounded bodies. If your duck looks too skinny, try making the body shape (from Step 2) wider and more rounded.
- Beak Too Pointy/Small: Duck beaks are flat and wide. If yours looks pointy or tiny, go back to Step 4 and make it a broader, more rounded shape.
- Wing Missing/Too Small: The wing adds character. If it’s missing or too small, ensure it’s a visible, rounded oval on the side of the body, as in Step 3.
- Feet Not Webbed: The webbed feet are a key feature! Make sure you add those three short lines at the bottom of each leg from Step 3.
- Head Tuft Missing: The little tuft on the head gives our cartoon duck personality. Don’t forget to add it as shown in Step 1.
Helpful Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids
- Smooth Curves: Ducks have smooth, rounded shapes. Try to use continuous, flowing lines for their body and head.
- Simple Shapes: Break down the duck into basic shapes like ovals and rounded lines to make it easier to draw.
- Symmetry for Face: When drawing the eye and beak, try to keep them balanced on the face for a friendly look.
- Draw Lightly First: Always start by sketching your shapes lightly with your pencil. This makes it much easier to erase and correct any lines before you go over them more darkly.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t get discouraged if your first duck isn’t exactly right. Keep practicing, and you’ll improve!
Duck Fun Facts for Kids
