Follow these six simple steps to draw a cute cartoon dragonfly!
Drawing Materials
- Paper
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Our Dragonfly Drawing Guide PDF Worksheet (optional)
Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if you make any mistakes.
Step 1: Draw the Head Outline
Start by drawing a circle for the dragonfly’s head.

Step 2: Draw the Dragonfly’s Body Shape
Below the head, draw a long, thin, curved oval for the body, making sure it tapers slightly towards the end. Then add small curved lines along the body to show the segments.

Step 3: Add the Wings
Draw four large, thin, oval shapes coming out from the middle section of the body. Two wings should point up and two should point down.

Step 4: Draw the Veins of the Wings
Inside each of the four wings, draw several thin, wiggly lines to represent the delicate veins.

Step 5: Add the Antennae and Face Details
Let’s give our dragonfly a cute face!
- Draw two short, curved lines sticking up from the top of the head for the antennae, ending each with a small dot.
- Draw two large dots for the eyes and a small curved line for a happy smile.
- Finish with two tiny dots for rosy cheeks.

Step 6: Color Your Speedy Dragonfly!
It’s time for color! Dragonflies are often metallic blue, green, or yellow. Color the head and body bright yellow, and use a very light blue or gray for the wings to make them look almost transparent.

5 Ways to Make Your Dragonfly Drawing More Fun!
Add a Pond: Draw a small pond and lily pads below the dragonfly to show its habitat.

Give It Speed: Draw dashed lines behind the body to show how quickly it flies.

Add Patterns: Draw small, colorful spots along the body section to give it more texture.

Draw Flowers: Have the dragonfly land on colorful yarrow flowers.

Change the Colors: Make the eyes blue instead of just black dots, and the body and face green to experiment with different looks.

How to Fix Common Dragonfly Drawing Mistakes
- Body Shape: Make sure the body is long and slender, tapering gently towards the end, as shown in Step 2. Avoid making it too short or too wide.
- Wing Symmetry: The wings should look balanced. Make sure the top two wings are roughly the same size as the bottom two wings in Step 3.
- Too Few Veins: The veins are key to the dragonfly look! Don’t skip Step 4; draw enough thin lines in the wings to make them look delicate.
- Head Size: The head is a simple circle shape and should be big enough to include the big eyes and give your dragonfly a friendly look.
Helpful Dragonfly Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids
- Light Wings: When coloring the wings, use the lightest possible pencil or crayon so you can still see the veins you drew in Step 4.
- Practice Ovals: The body and wings are mostly made of ovals. Practice drawing long, smooth ovals to make your dragonfly look graceful.
- Metallic Color: To make your dragonfly look metallic, use two different shades of the same color (like light blue and dark blue) next to each other on the body.
- Background Scene: Draw tall blades of grass or cattails behind your dragonfly to show it near a pond or lake.
