Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if there are mistakes. Continue by following the arrow step.

Step 1: Draw the Donkey’s Head Outline and Ears

Start by drawing an oval shape, like a slightly tilted pear for the donkey’s head.

On top of the head, draw two long, pointed oval shapes for both ears, making them stand upright. Add a small, curved line inside each ear shape to add detail.

Step 2: Add the Body Shape and Legs

From the bottom of the head, draw a longer, rounded, and slightly wider shape for the donkey’s body, connecting it smoothly to the head.

Draw two short, sturdy lines extending downwards from the bottom of the body for the front legs. Add two short curved lines for the back legs.

At the bottom of each leg, add a small trapezoid shape for the hooves.

Along the top of the neck, draw a series of short, zig-zag lines to create the mane.

At the back of the body, draw a long, slightly curved line for the tail, with a small tuft of fur at the very end.

  • Draw two small ovals inside the muzzle for the nostrils.
  • Above the muzzle, draw two ovals with smaller dots inside for the eyes.

How to Fix Common Donkey Drawing Mistakes

  • Body Too Thin/Small: Donkeys are usually sturdy! If your donkey looks too skinny, try making the body shape (from Step 2) larger and more rounded.
  • Muzzle Too Small/Wrong Shape: The muzzle is a key feature. Make sure it’s a prominent, rounded oval, as in Step 4.
  • Tail Too Short/Straight: A donkey’s tail is long and slightly curved with a tuft. If yours is too short or straight, adjust it in Step 3.
  • Missing Ear/Uneven Ears: Make sure your donkey has two ears. Try to make them similar in shape and size as seen in Step 1.
  • Legs Too Long/Thin or Missing Hooves: Donkey legs are short and sturdy, and remember to add those small hoof shapes at the bottom as shown in Step 2. If yours look too long or flimsy, shorten and thicken them.

Helpful Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Start with Simple Shapes: Notice how the donkey begins with basic pear/U-shapes and ovals. This makes it easier to build the rest of the drawing.
  • Smooth Lines: Donkeys are generally smooth, so try to use flowing, continuous lines when you draw.
  • Think Symmetry (for the face): Even though the head is slightly tilted, try to keep the eye and muzzle centered on the head to make it look friendly.
  • Practice Your Shapes: Drawing good rounded and slightly pointed shapes will help a lot with drawing donkeys, from their bodies to their ears!
  • Color Creatively: While grey is common, don’t be afraid to use other colors to make your donkey unique!

Donkey Fun Facts for Kids

  • Strong and Helpful: Donkeys are known for being strong and helpful animals, often used to carry heavy loads or work on farms.
  • Long Ears: Donkeys have very long ears, which help them hear sounds from far away, sometimes even better than horses!
  • Unique Sounds: Donkeys make a distinctive “hee-haw” sound, which is often called a bray. Each donkey’s bray can sound a little different!
  • Hardy Animals: Donkeys are very tough and can survive in many different kinds of environments, even hot, dry deserts.
  • Social Animals: Donkeys are social and like to live in groups called herds. They can form strong friendships with other animals, even horses!
  • Long Lifespan: Donkeys can live for a long time, often more than 30 years, and sometimes even over 50 years!
