Follow these six simple steps to draw a cute cartoon beetle!
Drawing Materials
- Paper
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if you make any mistakes.
Step 1: Draw the Beetle’s Head Outline
Start by drawing a half circle for the beetle’s head outline.

Step 2: Draw the Beetle’s Shell Outline
Draw a large, smooth oval shape extending down from the head shape to form the main body. Then draw a straight line down the center of this oval to divide the shell into two halves.
Erase any part of the head outline where the body attaches to make it look connected.

Step 3: Add Shell Texture
Draw several long, curved lines running vertically down the two shell halves to give the beetle’s shell a ribbed or textured look.

Step 4: Draw the Beetle’s Legs
Beetles are insects, so they need six legs! Draw three small, bent legs sticking out from each side of the body. To create the joints clearly, draw each leg using these two connected shapes:
- Upper Segment: Draw a short, thick rectangle pointing outward from the body.
- Lower Segment: Attach a longer, thinner triangle shape that bends downward, ending with a sharp point for the foot.

Step 5: Add Face Details and Horns
Let’s give our beetle a cute face!
- Draw two large horns or pincers curving outward and slightly up from the top sides of the head.
- Draw two small, circle eyes on the head with inner pupils.
- Add a simple curved smile and two small ovals on either side for cheeks.

Step 6: Color Your Tough Beetle!
Time to add color! Beetles can be shiny green, red, or black. Color the main shell a bright, grassy green, the head and legs a darker yellow, and fill in the face details with black.

5 Ways to Make Your Beetle Drawing More Fun!
Give It a Shine: Color the shell with different colors to make it look shiny and colorful.

Change the Horns: Try drawing tiny antennae instead of the large horns, or make the horns look like tiny antlers.

Give It a Pattern: Add small black circles or stripes along the shell lines for a unique look.

Draw a Log: Have your beetle sitting on a rough, textured wooden log.

Add a Friend: Draw a cute caterpillar next to your beetle.

How to Fix Common Beetle Drawing Mistakes
- Symmetry: The main oval body in Step 2 should be perfectly symmetrical around the center line. Use a ruler to help if needed!
- Center Line: Don’t forget the vertical line down the shell. This line in Step 2 is essential as it shows the two wing covers, called elytra.
- Leg Count: Beetles are insects, so they must have six legs (three on each side), as shown in Step 4.
- Joined Upper Body: The top of the shell and the head outline drawn in Step 1 must flow smoothly together without any gap or sharp corners where they meet.
Helpful Beetle Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids
- Keep it Smooth: Use continuous, gentle lines for the body and shell outlines to give the beetle a hard, sleek appearance.
- Practice Ovals: The whole drawing is based on large ovals. Practice drawing long, smooth ovals freehand for a graceful shape.
- Eyes and Smile: Giving the beetle big eyes and a wide smile instantly makes it look friendly instead of fierce!
- Background Leaves: Draw a few dark green leaves or a flower that the beetle might be protecting or munching on.
Beetle Fun Facts for Kids
- Tough Shells: Beetles have an incredibly hard outer shell called the elytra, which protects their soft bodies and their delicate flying wings underneath.
- Amazing Strength: Some types of beetles, like the Rhinoceros beetle, are considered the strongest animals on Earth for their size, able to lift many times their own weight!
- High Variety: Beetles make up the largest group of insects in the world, with over 350,000 known species!
- Plant Eaters: Many beetles, like the one shown here, feed on plants and leaves, while others eat decaying matter or even smaller insects.
