Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if there are mistakes. Continue by following the arrow step.

Step 1: Draw the Cow’s Body and Legs

Start by drawing a large, rounded, somewhat pear-shaped body. It should be wider at the back and slightly narrower at the front. Then, draw four short, sturdy lines extending downwards for the legs. Think of them as strong supports for our cow!

Step 2: Add the Cow’s Head and Ears

Now, let’s give our cow a head! Draw a rounded, somewhat square shape on top of the body, connecting it smoothly. On the sides of the head, draw two large, rounded oval shapes for the ears.

Step 3: Draw the Cow’s Body Details

This is where your cow gets its unique look! On the underside of the cow’s body, between the hind legs, draw a rounded, bag-like shape for the udder.

Then, draw several irregular, rounded shapes on the cow’s body to create its spots. You can make them any size or shape you like. For the tail, draw a curved line extending from the back of the body, with a fluffy tuft at the end.

Add small, rounded hoof shapes at the bottom of the legs to give your cow a realistic look.

Step 4: Add the Face Details and Horns

Let’s give our cow a friendly face!

  • On top of the head, above the ears, draw two curved, pointed shapes for the horns. Add a tuft of hair between them.
  • Inside the head shape, draw two large, round dots for the eyes.
  • Above each eye, draw a short, curved line for the eyebrows, giving your cow a sweet expression.
  • Below the eyes, draw a large, oval shape for the muzzle. Inside the muzzle, add two small, oval dots for nostrils.

Step 5: Color Your Friendly Cow!

Time to bring your cow to life with color! Our example cow is a golden yellow and orange, but you can choose any colors you like! Traditional cows are often black and white, or brown and white. Color the muzzle a lighter shade, and the horns a yellowish-brown.

How to Fix Common Cow Drawing Mistakes

  • Body Too Thin/Small: Cows are large, sturdy animals. If your cow looks too skinny or small, try making the body shape (from Step 1) larger and more rounded.
  • Head Too Small: The cow’s head should be proportionate to its body. If it looks tiny, go back to Step 2 and make the head shape larger.
  • Missing Udder/Spots: The udder and spots are key features for many cows! If you forgot them, go back to Step 3 and add them.
  • Horns Missing/Too Small: Horns are a distinctive feature for many cows. If you didn’t add them or they look too small, make them more prominent and curved as shown in Step 4.
  • Muzzle Too Small: The muzzle is a large part of a cow’s face. Make sure it’s a good-sized oval, as in Step 4.
  • Missing Eyebrows: The eyebrows really add to the cow’s expression. If you missed them, add those short, curved lines above the eyes as in Step 4!

Helpful Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Start with Light Lines: When you first sketch the basic shapes, use very light pencil strokes. This makes it easy to erase mistakes and adjust your drawing.
  • Think Rounded Shapes: Cows have many soft, rounded features – their bodies, heads, and ears.
  • Symmetry for Face: Try to make the eyes and nostrils balanced on the face for a friendly look.
  • Pattern Play: The spots don’t have to be perfect circles. Have fun creating unique, irregular shapes for them!
