Step 3: Draw the Fins and Gills

Now, on the top of the body, add a triangle shape to create the dorsal fin that stands out on a shark’s back. Then on the sides, draw a small triangle at the bottom and a large one on the side for the pectoral fins.

After that near the head, add three curved lines to show the gill slits.

Tip: Try to make the side fin long enough to make your shark look like it’s gliding through water.

How to Fix Common Shark Drawing Mistakes

  • Body Too Straight: Sometimes shark drawings look like stiff tubes! Try making it curve a little for a more natural look.
  • Top Fin Too Small or Pointy: In Step 3, the top fin is a noticeable triangle with a slightly curved front. If your fin is tiny or super pointy, try making it bigger and a bit rounded.
  • Side Fins in the Wrong Place: Look at Step 3 again – the side fins are about halfway down the body. Don’t draw them too close to the head or the tail.
  • Too Few Teeth: Sharks are famous for their teeth! In Step 4, we drew lots of little triangles. Don’t be shy – give your shark a good set of chompers!
  • Tail Too Small: The tail in Step 2 is a good size to help the shark swim. If your tail looks like a little flick, try making it bigger and more pronounced.

Helpful Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Start with Big Shapes: Just like we started with the raindrop shape for the body, begin with the biggest part of your drawing first.
  • Look at the Steps Carefully: Pay close attention to where each fin and the tail are placed in the picture.
  • Draw Lightly First: Use light pencil strokes for the main shapes so you can easily erase if you need to make changes.
  • Practice Those Teeth: Drawing lots of little triangles can be tricky. Take your time and try drawing a few rows of them.
  • Have Fun with Colors: Even though many sharks are gray or blue, you can use any colors you like for your cartoon shark!

Shark Fun Facts for Kids

  • Top of the Food Chain: Sharks are often at the top of the food chain in the ocean, which means not many other animals hunt them.
  • Super Smellers: Sharks have amazing noses! They can smell a tiny bit of blood from very far away in the water.
  • Lots of Teeth: Even though we drew pointy teeth, real sharks have many rows of teeth, and if they lose one, another one grows in its place!
  • Always Swimming: Most sharks need to keep swimming to keep water moving over their gills so they can breathe. It’s like they’re always on the go!
  • Different Kinds of Sharks: Just like there are different kinds of fish, there are lots of different kinds of sharks – some are huge like the whale shark, and some are small like the dogfish!
