Start by drawing lightly so that you can easily erase if there are mistakes. Continue by following the arrow step.

Step 1: Draw the Fish’s Body Shape

Firstly, draw a big oval for the fish’s body. Then, at the front of the oval, add a small triangle for the mouth. Then, draw a curved line to separate the head from the rest of the body.

Tip: Make the oval slightly long to give your fish a fun, rounded shape!

Step 2: Draw the Fish’s Tail and Fins

Moving on, from the back of the body, add a triangle for the tail. After that, draw two smaller triangles on the lower sides of the body for the fins and a larger, wider triangle for the top fin.

Tip: Make the tail nice and wide for a flowing, fishy look, and try drawing the fins a bit wavy for extra character!

Step 3: Draw Fin Details and Scales of the Fish

Now, inside each fin, draw small lines to give them a feathery, textured look. Then, on the body, add small overlapping circles for scales to make the fish look scaly and shiny.

Tip: Draw the lines gently and lightly; they don’t need to be perfect. For the scales, keep them small and close together for a smooth, scaly effect.

Step 4: Draw The Face Details

Near the front of the body, draw a large outline circle for the eye, with a big circle inside and a smaller circle to make the eye look bright. Then below the eye, add a small curved line to show the fish’s mouth.

Tip: A big eye gives the fish a cute and friendly look! Try making the eye extra round for a fun touch.

Step 5: Color Your Fish

Finally, it’s time to color your fish! to make it unique you can choose colors like orange, blue, green, or even rainbow shades. Add patterns like stripes or spots to give it even more personality.

Tip: Mix colors to make the scales look shiny. Try using a few shades of the same color for a cool, underwater look.

How to Fix Common Fish Drawing Mistakes

  • Tail Too Small: The tail in Step 2 and the final colored fish is a good size to help it swim. If your tail is just a tiny flick, try making it bigger and wider like a sideways “V”.
  • Body Too Stiff: Sometimes fish drawings look like straight sausages! Remember from Step 1, our fish body is a gentle, stretched-out oval. Try making your oval a little curved and flowing instead of perfectly straight.
  • Fins Too Small or Pointy: In Step 2, see how the fins are soft, curved triangles? If your fins look like sharp spikes or tiny triangles, try making them bigger and rounder to help your fish look like it can really swim.
  • Scales Look Messy: In Step 3, the scales are neat little curved lines that overlap. If your scales look like scribbles, try drawing them more carefully, one next to the other, like tiny rainbows touching.
  • Eyes in the Wrong Place: Look at Step 4 – the eye is towards the front of the head. Sometimes people draw the eye right in the middle! Put your fish’s eye closer to its mouth for a more fishy look.

Helpful Drawing Tips and Tricks For Kids

  • Use Light Lines First: When you start drawing the body and fins, draw lightly. That way, if you make a mistake, it’s easy to erase and try again. You can make your lines darker when you’re happy with the shape.
  • Start with Simple Shapes: Just like we started with an oval for the fish’s body, try breaking down everything you want to draw into easy shapes first.
  • Look Closely: Really look at the picture for each step! Notice how big the fins are compared to the body, or where the eye sits.
  • Practice Makes Progress: The picture even says “Practice”! Don’t worry if your first fish isn’t perfect. Keep trying, and each time you draw, it will get better.
  • Have Fun with Color: Like the colorful fish at the end, don’t be afraid to use lots of different colors and be creative! There are no rules for how your fish has to look.

Fish Fun Facts for Kids

  • Underwater Breathers: Fish use special parts called gills to breathe underwater – they take oxygen right from the water!
  • Scales are Protectors: The little lines we drew are scales, and they help keep the fish safe, like a coat of armor!
  • Super Swimmers: Fish use their fins to steer and their tail to zoom through the water!
  • Different Shapes, Different Homes: Real fish come in all sorts of shapes – long, flat, round – to live in different watery places.
